{"id":59,"date":"2023-04-19T16:46:25","date_gmt":"2023-04-19T20:46:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/19thcenturylesbiandesire\/?p=59"},"modified":"2023-05-10T15:01:11","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T19:01:11","slug":"cross-dressing-and-student-plays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/19thcenturylesbiandesire\/cross-dressing-and-student-plays\/","title":{"rendered":"Cross-dressing in Student Plays &amp; Events"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student Plays and Events<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to documenting their queer desire through diary entries and letters, Smith students frequently acted in numerous plays (house plays, student theatre, etc.) where they felt free to express themselves by taking the role of the &#8220;man&#8221; or simply dressing in masculine attire. This was an extremely common practice for the first forty or so years following Smith&#8217;s opening in 1875.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there were efforts to ban this practice by President Seelye in 1881 (specifically for theatre performances open to the public) the administration and even some students on campus (through a group named the &#8220;Squelch Committee&#8221; in the late 19th century) many students continued to cross-dress in their theatre performances and other events frequently through the start of the 20th century.<sup><a href=\"#footnotes\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#footnotes\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Sally Newman&#8217;s dissertation,<em> Traces of Desire: Reading the Lesbian Archive<\/em>, she states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAccording to dates on extant photographs, the habit of wearing \u2018masculine attire\u2019 appears to have proliferated throughout Smith culture (dances, parties) over the period 1893-98, with the majority of photographs concentrated in the period 1904-1914.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems likely that one of the reasons for the popularity of wearing \u2018masculine attire\u2019 was the opportunity it gave the students to experiment with the erotic possibilities offered by taking on the \u2018manly part.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the quest for \u2018authentic\u2019 characterization of male parts, students were able to play with the idea of homo-erotic desire, but with the understanding that the artifice involved was contained by the temporary and fictional boundaries of the play and its staging, the \u2018Mock Wedding\u2019 or the \u2018Man Dance.\u2019&#8221; (Newman, 133)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elizabeth Rusk, Class of 1916<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/19thcenturylesbiandesire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/957\/2023\/04\/rusk-cropped-grad-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/19thcenturylesbiandesire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/957\/2023\/04\/rusk-cropped-grad-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-195\" width=\"340\" height=\"506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/19thcenturylesbiandesire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/957\/2023\/04\/rusk-cropped-grad-scaled.jpg 1724w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/19thcenturylesbiandesire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/957\/2023\/04\/rusk-cropped-grad-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/19thcenturylesbiandesire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/957\/2023\/04\/rusk-cropped-grad-690x1024.jpg 690w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/19thcenturylesbiandesire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/957\/2023\/04\/rusk-cropped-grad-768x1140.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/19thcenturylesbiandesire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/957\/2023\/04\/rusk-cropped-grad-1035x1536.jpg 1035w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/19thcenturylesbiandesire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/957\/2023\/04\/rusk-cropped-grad-1379x2048.jpg 1379w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/19thcenturylesbiandesire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/957\/2023\/04\/rusk-cropped-grad-65x96.jpg 65w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Elizabeth Rusk, Class of 1916<\/em><sup><a href=\"#footnotes\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#footnotes\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The memorabilia book of Elizabeth Rusk, Smith College Class of 1916, is in particular full of these moments of gender-bending, lesbian desire and expression, and simply queer joy.
