While t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he caged bird is surrounded by misery and can only dream of freedom. Expressing sorrows and desire for freedom through song<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a metaphor for enslaved black people, trapped in the cage of oppression and vocalizing their wish for liberation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-952 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/afr111-f19\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/442\/2019\/12\/maya-angelou.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"195\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Song has always been an integral part of black culture and is central to Maya Angelou\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> poem, <em>Caged<\/em><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Bird<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
