{"id":111,"date":"2021-05-06T09:51:29","date_gmt":"2021-05-06T13:51:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/angela-calomiris\/?p=111"},"modified":"2021-05-18T16:45:35","modified_gmt":"2021-05-18T20:45:35","slug":"early-life-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/angela-calomiris\/2021\/05\/06\/early-life-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Childhood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Angela Calomiris&#8217; collection at the Lesbian Herstory Archives, there is very little written or saved pertaining to her childhood.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-111-1' id='fnref-111-1' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(111)'>1<\/a><\/sup> In her autobiography, <em>Red Masquerade\u00a0<\/em>(1950), Calomiris describes aspects of her youth, though much of her adolescence would be indiscernible without census records and other legal documents.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-111-2' id='fnref-111-2' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(111)'>2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>An Impoverished Childhood<\/h2>\n<p>Angela Calomiris was born in New York City on August 1st, 1916. Her parents were Greek immigrants, Gus and Maria Calomiris, and immigrated to the United States in 1912 and 1915, respectively.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-111-3' id='fnref-111-3' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(111)'>3<\/a><\/sup> Her father, Gus, was a furrier who struggled to keep a job.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-111-4' id='fnref-111-4' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(111)'>4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>By 1930, Calomiris&#8217; father was dead, leaving her mother a widow and the sole-provider of six children<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-111-5' id='fnref-111-5' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(111)'>5<\/a><\/sup>. The year of Gus Calomiris\u2019 death and what happened to their family consequently is unclear. In <em>Red Masquerade,\u00a0<\/em>Calomiris claims her father died when she was fifteen,<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-111-6' id='fnref-111-6' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(111)'>6<\/a><\/sup> though author Lisa E. Davis has claimed that this was a lie, and that Calomiris&#8217; father died when she was seven, resulting in her being sent to the Sevilla Home for Children.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-111-7' id='fnref-111-7' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(111)'>7<\/a><\/sup> Both claims are confused all the more by the fact Calomiris is documented twice on the 1930 census.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-111-8' id='fnref-111-8' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(111)'>8<\/a><\/sup> She is documented as living with her mother and her five siblings in Brooklyn, and also as living at the Sevilla Home for Children with her sister, &#8220;Vesilla&#8221; (possibly a misspelling of &#8220;Celia&#8221;). The 1930 census indicates Calomiris&#8217; mother, Maria, gave birth in 1927, maybe indicating that Gus died between 1927 and 1930.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-111-9' id='fnref-111-9' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(111)'>9<\/a><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\">1930 Censuses<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><div class=\"h5p-iframe-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"h5p-iframe-10\" class=\"h5p-iframe\" data-content-id=\"10\" style=\"height:1px\" src=\"about:blank\" frameBorder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" title=\"1930 Census Brooklyn\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><\/i><em><span class=\"s1\">1930 Census, Brooklyn, New York, Page 6A, Enumeration District 0044, FHL microfilm 2341236.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><div class=\"h5p-iframe-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"h5p-iframe-11\" class=\"h5p-iframe\" data-content-id=\"11\" style=\"height:1px\" src=\"about:blank\" frameBorder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" title=\"1930 Census Sevilla\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>1930 Census, Bronx, New York, Page 23A, Enumeration District 0228, FHL microfilm 2341205.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 1932, Calomiris&#8217; younger brother, Harry, died in Cumberland Hospital at the age of twelve.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-111-10' id='fnref-111-10' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(111)'>10<\/a><\/sup> It is unclear what happened to Calomiris&#8217; family between 1932 and 1940. By 1940, her&#8217; older sister, Dorothy, was reported to be living in Pilgrim State Hospital, a psychiatric care facility in Brentwood, NY.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-111-11' id='fnref-111-11' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(111)'>11<\/a><\/sup><\/span> Also on the 1940 census, her two younger sisters, Antonia and Helen, were identified as living at homes for girls in Brooklyn, NY\u2013 suggesting that their mother, Maria, died between 1930 and 1940.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-111-12' id='fnref-111-12' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(111)'>12<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\">Dorothy on the 1940 Census<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><div class=\"h5p-iframe-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"h5p-iframe-9\" class=\"h5p-iframe\" data-content-id=\"9\" style=\"height:1px\" src=\"about:blank\" frameBorder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" title=\"1940 Census Dorothy\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a01940 Census, New York, Kings, New York, Roll m-t0627-02598, Page 1A, Enumeration District\u00a0 24-1993<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Young Photographer<\/h2>\n<p>In light of the many instabilities of her childhood, Calomiris discovered her passion for photography. She knew early on that she wanted to be a photographer. She recalled in <em>Red Masquerade<\/em>, &#8220;I don\u2019t think I ever consciously made up my mind to be a photographer. I was always going to be one, as far back as I can remember.\u201d<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-111-13' id='fnref-111-13' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(111)'>13<\/a><\/sup> Taking pictures was a way for Calomiris to document her experiences and make sense of her world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>High School<\/h2>\n<p>Calomiris graduated from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bayard_Rustin_Educational_Complex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Straubenmuller Textile High School<\/a>, a high school specializing in textile trade and production.
