I am enclosing a very poor expression of what Juniper Lodge has meant to me, and hope you will be able to find in it something to use for the Quarterly. You have my permission to do to it anything you want to do in the way of cutting down, rewording, or omitting portions or sentences. Nor shall I feel hurt if you fail to insert the customary three dots for omissions. I think sometimes the insertion of the aforesaid dots gives the reader a feeling of jerkiness that the narrative would not have without them.

The portion on climbing Chocorua is written from personal experience, I am proud to say. Yesterday Miss Patch and I made the trip in three hours, stayed on the summit three hours, and arrived at the Lodge in time for a 6:30 supper. The view from the summit is amazing, and we had a clear day which gave us the full benefit of it.

Our household, to whom I truly delivered your message, has been augmented by the presence of B. Walton and Rosie Nelson, with whom I am now sharing the sleeping porch. It seems quite like college to have so many Lawrence House people here, and very pleasant. Miss Smith goes Monday, and we shall miss her. I say “we” although I leave then also, in preference to the more remote and unfriendly pronoun. I am stopping in Northampton two days to collect some theses from the School of Social Work and do some other little errands before I go into my retirement at Charlemont.

As an addendum to my more formal remarks on Juniper Lodge, I can only say how very much I have enjoyed being here, and how grateful I am to the College and to you for making my visit possible. I appreciate the personal interest you take in each member of our “family” here, and feel that it aids greatly in making Juniper Lodge a success. With best wishes for a happy and restful vacation, I am

Sincerely yours,

Frances Sue Doris

[Letter to Miss Cutler from Frances Sue Doris, 1925, Smith College Archives, Buildings Records, Box 219, Juniper Lodge, A – Correspondence.]

Transcription Juniper Lodge Sunday, July 26th 1925 My dear Miss Cutler: Thank you so much for your kind letter and the “gaudy” postcard, which took me back to the ocean nevertheless.
