Our house

This image shows a blackout poetry piece created on page 82 of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”. The background is predominantly collaged over in leaf-print tape. Select words and phrases have been left uncovered, creating a new poetic message against the patterned background. A black-and-white photograph of a group of people is pasted at the bottom of the page, atop the obscured text.

Our house

no longer that happy creature,

now misery has come home, and men
appear to me as monsters thirsting for each other’s blood.
