I should attempt the creation of a being
like myself

my operations might be
incessantly baffled, lest my work be imperfect.

the minuteness of the female parts formed a great hinderance
contrary to my first intention,

collecting and arranging my materials, I began.

A new species would bless me as
its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe
their being to me. No father could claim the gratitude of his child so
completely as I should deserve theirs.

I pursued my undertak-
ing with unremitting ardour.

I failed;

Who shall conceive the
horrors of my secret toil,
