What is it you want to talk about? (It can be an object, a piece of music, a story, a family tradition)
-One family tradition that I want to talk about is origami, particularly making paper cranes with my brother.
What is the story behind it?
-When I was little, my brother always made paper cranes to entertain me when I was board or anxious. He later taught me how to make them, and I still do when I want to pass the time. To this day, I associate parts of my childhood with making paper cranes and other origami animals.
What does it say about you, your family, or the associated people?
-It is a random tradition, but I would say that some part of it stemmed from the fact that I had a rather lonely childhood. We were an immigrant family, so we never had any longterm connections or great friends, and I never had the opportunity to have a childhood friendgroup. As a result, I spent a lot time either by myself or with my family, so the things we did together left a lasting impression on me.
How are you going to present this story? How are you going to engage the listeners throughout the podcast?
-First, I would like to talk about the history of the paper crane and why it’s such a popular piece of origami, as well as its symbolic significance in Japanese culture. Then I will discuss my personal experiences with making it and how it relates to my childhood and upbringing as an immigrant child. I think the two big themes that I want to explore in this project are nostalgia and loneliness.
Do you plan to interview other people?
-I’m not sure, it’s not necessary for my project. I could maybe talk to my dad and see what he knows about paper cranes in general, since he also has a fascination with them, but it’s not crucial to the podcast.
