Oil Painting of a young Black person with a bird in a tree behind

“A Song of Silence,” 2019. Oil on canvas, 12 x 12 inches.
Artist Statement: Bearing in mind that silence is its own form of protest, the theme of this piece is its own form of protest. Within my memory is my daughter’s childhood friend.  Adding to that is another layer derived from various portraits I have encountered both historical and contemporary. As a painting, ‘Song  of Silence’ stands on its own merit. I ask only that the viewer of this work search for his or her own times of silence and its possible relevance to the issue at hand. In painting allegory, I find the metaphor, and the act of simultaneously hiding and presenting narrative, very appealing. The veiled message created to make a point more powerful and the freedom to transcend the logical is the matrix of my work.

Cromwell Day provides dedicated time and space for reflection and education about diversity, racism and inclusion. Through this work, we seek to take individual and community responsibility for our behavior with an awareness of how it furthers and disrupts patterns of structural oppression.
