text: You Wanna Move Beyond the Abstract? Smith and all other private institutions profit off of anti-blackness

“Untitled,” 2020. Digital Artwork, 1080 x 1080 pixels.

Artist Statement: ”As for a statement, I made this piece because the call for art bothered me. I often feel that Smith’s efforts at antiracism are surface-level, and don’t come close to undoing oppression on campus. I think Smith will always avoid the root of its problems – its existence as a private institution in our capitalist economy.”

Cromwell Day provides dedicated time and space for reflection and education about diversity, racism and inclusion. Through this work, we seek to take individual and community responsibility for our behavior with an awareness of how it furthers and disrupts patterns of structural oppression.
