Kiara is a creator, choreographer, multimedia artist and designer; majoring in Dance and concentrating in Community Engagement and Social Change at Smith College. On campus, she is the Co-Artistic Director of Celebrations Dance Company, the official student lead company of the college. Her studies have been structured with a wide range of technique courses, including, ballet, contemporary, modern, hip Hop, West African, contact improvisation, etc.; as well as extensive choreography development research. Some of her repertoire work during her time at Smith within the 5 college dance department includes “A New Second Line” by Camille A. Brown, various works from West African Choreographer Marilyn Sylla, and a series of Hip Hop Choreographies by Shakia Barron. She spent the second semester of her Junior year studying traditional Afro Cuban dance practices in Havana, Cuba with a focus on rumba and folkloric dance at the University of the Arts in Havana and with private tutors. Post-Graduation, she aspires to continue her training at the professional level and open her own arts nonprofit organization that serves as an outlet for growth and expression for marginalized youth.
As a dance maker, flow and fusion are two of Kiara’s primary focuses. As a versatile dancer, moved by a series of styles, finding ways to appreciate and incorporate many at once in a work is always an adventure. Her favorite styles to fuse are modern, West African, and hip hop within a contemporary style of flow. Finding liberation within movement has always been Kiara’s internal motivation for dance. Source Return is an extension of the freedom she finds when connecting her mind, body and spirit through this practice.
