Naturally . . .
Glass Pocket felt like a jewel box that I could keep safe and sound. It is clarified and contained. There is a specific narrative that goes along with the character in the box.
For my second film, my intention was to break out of the jewel box and fixed frame and into a completely contrasting environment that allowed for a more personal connection with the live performer. In Glass Pocket, the audience is distanced from the performer, yet also right there watching. In Naturally, I am invested in the movement journey and true experience of the three locations around the island of O’ahu: Ho’omaluhia, Ko’olau mountains in Kane’ohe, and Wawamalu. In this piece, I used Raw footage and surround sound from the three locations mountain to ocean. I want the viewer to get a clear sense of the land and the space the body is occupying in relation to the landscapes around her.
