ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Mayeline was born and raised in the Dominican Republic, surrounded by the tropical sounds and movements from her island and the islands nearby. When she moved to the United States, she attended a performing arts high school where she received her training in ballet and contemporary forms and starred in several musical theater productions such as A Chorus Line, Evita, Cabaret, and Urinetown. At Smith, May is pursuing a double major in Dance & Computer Science. Here she has opened the doors to more improvisation, lots of West African and Hip Hop, and for the first time choreographed her own work for a show! She is beyond grateful to have others witness her work. She has also developed dance video-making skills, learning how to capture detailed footage and expert editing using Adobe Premiere. Immediately after graduation May is set to go back to the D.R. to open her own program to teach girls how to code for the summer (support this project by going to gf.me/u/zku4vy) before she joins Morgan Stanley as a Technology Analyst in the fall. She hopes to keep dancing amid all the work and continue to create art with the tools she has learned from Smith.
As an artist, Mayeline believes in her work being what it wants to be, lending entity to the dance itself to show itself through every rehearsal. In her work, she explores the intricate relationship between all the dance forms in her body and how they each decide to show up. She also keeps the people watching her work present during the creative process so as to use them as collaborators at all times. As a young artist, she is still stepping into her aesthetic, dance beliefs, and artistic identity. She invites you to watch this journey unfold through this work and other works on her Vimeo page linked here.
