Set up an Exam PDF for students to print without downloading

Using our Direct-to-Queue Application, you can set up PDF for students to Print without their ever downloading the file.  This system is currently in pilot, so it won’t work unless you have already been in touch to get your account set up.

Log in and complete the basic set up

Choose a PDF of your exam.  Make sure you give the file a title that you and your students will recognize.  Something like “Prof. Smith BIO 100 Exam 2 Spring 2019” would be good. (or, download this sample if you are just testing).

Go to and log in with your Smith credentials if you are not automatically logged in.  You should see the screen below.

Click the button that reads “Click here to add your exam”.  You will be presented with a screen that looks like this:

Where it says “Enter title here” type a name for your exam.  Make it something students will recognize.  It does not need to have the same name as the PDF, but something like “Dr. Smith – BIO 100 – Spring 2019 – Exam 2” would be good.

Upload your exam by clicking the Add File button.   Check to make sure you are uploading the one you want.

Decide who can print the exam and when they can print it

At the moment, your exam is not accessible to anyone – even you! You need to allow people to access the exam by listing their email addresses.  You also need to set the date window in which they will be able to print.   All the directions are pretty self-explanatory, but they are outlined below.

Get a list of email addresses.  You can get this from a variety of sources, but the easiest way is to download a copy of your Moodle gradebook.  In the end, you are going to want a simple list of emails, separated by newlines, like this:

These must be the email addresses that people use to log in to Moodle. Paste that list into #2.

Now pick the date and time that the exam will be open for printing, and the time that it will be closed.

Give students the link they can use to print

You can give the students the link any any time – and through any method.  You can post it in Moodle or send it in an email.  They will not be able to see or print the exam unless you have explicitly given them access and it is in the date window as described above.

Click on tab #5 Publish link to students.

If you have not already done so, click the blue Publish button in the box on the right.

You should now see a link, highlighted in teal, that you can distribute to students.

You can read more about the student experience from this point in this article, on Printing an exam PDF.

We'd love your feedback!
