Mariela Gomez “Mary”
26 year old woman with eyebags of someone older
She works for an arts financier in the middle of nowhere, this job was basically a death sentence.
She had a deceptive young look about her – everything about her was underdeveloped. She had stayed 5’2 ever since high school. She began to dress older because she grew tired of how they used that to belittle her. She sought to be an exemplary youth and not part of the rowdy crowd of newcomers.
She tends to gravitate towards certain colors in her clothes. Brown, cream, orange and white.
Some days she couldn’t stand up from her bed – everything was gray and empty. When she couldn’t push through those days she knew just what to say to the people at her job so it doesn’t reflect badly on her.
After 5 years doing basic office work, she was finally moved to the financing department. She had to take care of investors for theatrical venues for the town. She doesn’t know how she got so lucky but she had an urgent need to prove herself. This opportunity could be taken away as fast as it got given.
Her first assignment was to
She smoked because everyone else did.
Long silky black hair, when she lets it down which is rarely she looks like a princess
Brown eyes that in the night look like two endless pits but at the first sight of light become soft & weak. Her mom once said “Deja de mirarme con esos ojos de carnero degollado”. In her country this means to look and beg for compassion. It’s a sinister way to get something from another person
She hides her eyes behind cat eyed sunglasses. It doesn’t look strange when she wears them on sunny days just like any other fashionable lady but she never leaves the house without them on. In the office she wears a similar
She is a passive onlooker of her world. In her job she passes the time listening to others talk. It gave her an insight into what others wanted to hear from her. She maintained an air of unknown that read as professionalism that allowed her to slowly rise in the company
She never attempts to start a conversation
She has one mole just under her right eye
She resents people for the assumptions they make about her. She is not boring & probably has a more interesting inner life than any of them.
She lost contact with the only friend she ever made after college – Donna. She might have been the only good person in the world.
She has really complicated feelings about her.
She had never fallen in love with anyone else. She hoped Donna would have just been a passing thing but she never stopped thinking about her – she would never admit that to herself. In her paintings, too many of her subjects looked like Donna.
She has had relationships with men but she never felt attached to them. She noticed their flirting and she just played their game
She loves to draw– especially faces. When she draws she feels a connection to her subjects. She is so good she can imagine sculpting their head with her hands.
She has splayed all over her wall: magazines cutouts from vogue, postcards and pictures from travelogs. They were pricey books but she hoped that once she was old and decrepit she could go there.
Her favorite singers were all Spanish. The type that pronounced their s’s with such intensity that they all sounded like snakes. She spent many Friday nights giggling at her imitations of Rocio Durcal.
She is part of Duke University class of 1959.
She grew up with her mom. She had been the most constant thing in her life. When she was looking to move for college they had some of their worst arguments. Despite everything, her mom let her go – she understood the importance of the opportunity
She sometimes goes to sleep thinking of numbers & has a hard time separating her home life from work.
The only thing she remembers sharing with her dad was cutting open an animal for a new year’s party
Her favorite song is La malaguena by Trio Calavera. She first heard it in an old movie her mom was watching. She wants to someday dedicate it to somebody.
She was one of the few people who lived in an apartment complex
She wishes she knew how to cook – she even takes out many cooking books from the library with the hope she will pick them up someday. The only thing she remembers her dad doing was cooking for their family
She has a small notebook that she carries everywhere : she puts anything beautiful she can find in its pages. When she opens it, sometimes pressed flowers fall out. She always has that black notebook with every book she reads. She writes down phrases that stay with her –
Her favorite lipstick shades
She always wanted a dog when she was a kid. She was making her own money now but she couldn’t imagine what it means to take care of another living thing. She couldn’t live with herself if she ever hurt such a gentle animal so she settled for houseplants. She talked to them like they could hear her.
She fed the cat that lived in a dumpster near her house. She was thankful that it never attempted to follow her home. She wouldn’t know what to do if it did.
Her favorite fruit was oranges and mangos, she could rarely eat them which only made them taste sweeter once she did. She wishes all of the corn rows would turn into groves – that would have been a heavenly miracle.
She has an obsession with Shakespeare plays – her favorite is Macbeth
She drinks more than she wishes. Her drink of choice is a martini.
She is very meticulous about the way she looks. She knows all of her imperfections and has done plenty of research on how to hide them. Despite her insecurities she would never get plastic surgery. She was going to make the best with what she had.
She has a lot of empty notebooks she doesn’t know what to do with them
She doesn’t have any pictures of her dad but her mom always said she looked too much like him
When she gets overwhelmed with life her rooms get very messy. With food going bad and clothes everywhere. When she snaps out of it she feels shame for letting herself go.
Her mom was very Christian. She has very difficult feelings about religion : on one hand she despises it but she feels very calm everytime she enters a church.
She knows that the only reason she is in the middle of nowhere was to be as far from her mother as possible. She never felt like her own human being. Even in college the ghost of her mother’s expectations haunted her everywhere. She cut contact with her mother a long time ago
She wishes she had a sister
She sleeps in just an old construction t-shirt. It might have been from a team building event
She doesn’t drive – she still takes public transportation
She is a little terrified of her own strength and how far her anger can take her. She still remembers the time she broke her hand when she punched a wall
She dances by herself a lot – she does it pretty well. She wishes she knew how to lead.
Her best friend is that old lady at the library. She is so unconditionally kind to her. She had been invited to dinner at her house many times. Her daughter killed herself 8 years ago. It broke Marielena’s heart when the old lady said she reminded her of her daughter.
In the morning she has a very sensitive stomach so she just eats toast with scrambled eggs. When she wants something sweet she would drink chocolate milk, if not she would just drink water.
The only thing she has that is precious is the silver rosary she got from her mom at communion
Her favorite movie is Rebecca by Alfred Hitchcock

She is a woman of color
She attends a predominately white college (Smith for example but most colleges are predominantly white so do the specifics matter, I am not sure they do)
Her father is a blue-collar worker (something like a welder or a construction worker)
Her mother is unemployed, and picks up odd jobs around the neighborhood, cleaning, delivery jobs, and things like that
First generation student
Her friend group is majorly white
Yes she is a woman of color, but her mother is white, she just is not white presenting
Grew up somewhere with more people like her, some kind of big city or something, her new college town is a bit of a culture shock
Brown eyes
Thick curly hair, think 3A or 3B hair type
Her favorite food is pho, something she hasn’t had since being at college, she misses it
Intelligent, but not in a natural sense, in the sense that she has to work every second of every day to be where she is.
Very limited social battery
Cares what people think, molds and matches the energy of the people around her according to their mannerisms, and does whatever seems most likable
She falls for microtrends every time, with no consistent style, whatever is popular on the internet she wears
Wants to stand out but not too much
Has been at college for only a few months now
When she left home after winter break she stopped getting texts as often from her family
Has a younger brother
Feels she has left the younger brother behind
She doesn’t work currently, no bills to pay what’s the use
She is tired of food service jobs
She used to work fast food when she was younger to help with the rent
After that she worked at a retirement home, she didn’t mind the job or the people it was decent pay
She tried a few shifts at the college dining hall and hated it
She wants a big girl job, something behind a desk
Her walls are covered in art she has made of posters
The clutter makes her feel good
She also instead of a nightstand has half of the bed where she doesn’t sleep that’s where all her stuff that would go on a nightstand goes
She has learned that it is called nesting she likes that term because it makes it seem much sweeter than it is because it’s not sweet at all it’s sad and depressing and kind of gross
She is bipolar, and not actually in the way people mean moody or can’t make up her mind but like actually diagnosed bipolar
Type 2 not Type 1
70% of bipolar people drop out or don’t graduate, maybe she’ll be a statistic she thinks
She also relates a little too heavily to all the bright places specifically the character Finch
And on that note also Ian from Shameless, he too is bipolar
On that note, all the Bright Places is her favorite movie of all time
Cusses like a sailor
Loves Sprite and Dr. Pepper
Hasnt drunken soda in a bit though, something to do with weight loss and body issues
She is really scared she will type me or my instead of she, very few of these are fictionalized facts though some are
She has friends in college but is worried if they are her friends by choice or force
Her favorite animals are monkeys specifically baby orangutangs
She loves Bluey, yes it is a kid’s show and no she does not care
Shes broke bones, both arms and one leg, no not all at the same time
Her mom caused her to break her leg
It wasn’t an abuse thing her mom was on a pogo stick and fell backward onto her and it was at a weird angle, an unfortunate mistake
When she broke her leg the firefighters had to cut off her brand-new hello kitty jeans and it sucked
She wears a skin suit
The skinsuit is to help her fit in blend in be more like them, she just wants to fit in
She doesn’t want kids if she does have them it won’t be like born from her, bipolar is inherited, and no one she claims to love should have to feel the way she does
She got hers from her mom, the fear is not irrational
Speaking of fears she is scared of everyone leaving some sort of abandonment issues
On a lighter note she is also scared of mascots, you know like the ones with heads that come on and off, that one is irrational
She wishes on dandelions
She wishes on birthday candles
Once she wished on a shooting star
She isn’t religious but anytime she has ever prayed for something she has gotten it, so her relationship with faith is a bit weird
She prayed when she got that fast food job, she lied about her age and said she was a year older, the boss asked about it when she got her ID, and she just kept lying, and prayed that they would stop asking and wouldn’t fire her
They didn’t fire her, she worked there for almost 4 months
She prayed again when she and her girlfriend got into a really big fight, one that was her fault, she prayed to stay together
They stayed together and sometimes she wishes they didn’t
She also uses crystals, that’s a kind of spiritual thing
Maybe they work maybe it’s just divine intervention she doesn’t know
She likes the crystals though, they’re pretty and make her seem interesting so she buys more
Fall is her favorite
It may be an ego thing because her birthday also falls in the fall
Her birthday is her favorite holiday, she thinks it should be declared a national holiday
She can sleep in any conditions
Once she and her family had to sleep in a tent for awhile
They got kicked out, she got the cot in the tent and the others slept on the floor
Looking back she feels kind of bad that, she didn’t know any better
She wrote her college essay about sleeping in that tent
She also wrote about loving to read
She has a dog
The dog’s name is Junior, she hates that name and thinks it’s no name for a dog
But she loves junior
When she gets depressed, which is often, Junior is the only one to lay with her
Once when she was depressed, she watched every single movie on Disney Plus in alphabetical order even the old ones and the documentaries
She was Princess Jasmine for Halloween like 4 years in a row
There are pictures somewhere of her in the costume over the years with her grandma and brother
She also loves and misses her dance costumes
Maybe she just loves dressing up
She lies
She lies about not knowing how to tie her shoes
She can tie her shoes
She just wants other people to tie her shoes for her, it is some sort of love language
Very pretentious about music, name an artist and she will say she knew them before they were popular
Simultaneously she doesn’t listen to very much music
She listens to the same song on repeat for days until it makes her sick and then finds a new song to fixate on
Her favorite artist is Billie Eilish
She only started listening to her to fill in holes in case a lie she told would get uncovered
Her girlfriend pays for her Spotify Premium
But she pays for Disney Plus and Hulu so it’s even
She sometimes kicks her girlfriend out of them if they fight
But then they make up and want to watch something together so she says it was an accident, but it wasn’t
This one time her girlfriend lied to her and they got into a huge fight, they even broke up for like a minute
She thinks the minute should have lasted longer
She loves her girlfriend
She knows it takes strength to forgive
But she does not feel strong.

She does not care about her professional career
Her ideal lifestyle is traveling the country and living in a van, but she gets a sense that this isn’t a responsible decision

Junk food is her vice, especially cheap dollar store junk food
She’s a Pisces

She’ll stop at any claw machine if she has the time and a dollar
She loves swimming in natural bodies of water way more than pools

She misses and admires her grandma, who died when she was young and was incredibly funny
She feels some level of disconnect from her parents, like they don’t really understand her
She felt she didn’t really fit in with the kids at her high school and didn’t make any super close, long-lasting friendships
She started easily making serious strong friendships once she got to college and it changed the way she views relationships with all people in life
She is a lesbian, which made it harder to fit in in high school but made her feel very at home at Smith
She loves severe temperatures and weather— cold snow and hot sun
She studies “weird” areas of history in class and in her free time, like the witch trials
The follows the @depthsofwikipedia page on instagram and thoroughly likes each post and everything she learns from it

Quality time, acts of service, and gift giving are major love languages to her
She’s academically a jack of all trades, and is moderately good in most subjects but not highly interested in pursuing any of them for pay
She does not lack motivation and readily picks up any part time job she can convince herself is “fun” (but doing it full time would be far too boring)
She has way too much clothes and way too many pairs of shoes in her dorm closet. They’re mostly from house free bins or destined for free bins by the end of the year.

Her mother was an artist and the most beautiful woman in the world.
Her mother’s beauty, like linen sheets blowing in the wind, loomed over her from the time she was born.
She used to sit on her mother’s chest and drag her hands over her face, pushing and pulling it to try and contort it into something ugly. She was never successful.
Her mother was beautiful because she gave her full attention to everything she did. They way she looked at you when you spoke to her made any tension
As a child, when she cried, her mother would scoop her into her arms and hold her so tight she, all her energy coursing through her, blocking her view from everything but wisps of blonde hair and freckled skin, that she would forget almost immediately why she’d been crying.
Rather than making her feel embarrassed or regretful of her tears, her mother would look at her with her big blue eyes and ask her what she was feeling and what she wanted.

She likes writing but she loves reading.
And she loves talking about books.
Her penpal Marianne, who moved away from the coast when they were 13 used to write to her about the books she was reading and her fancy city school.
She read all of them, waiting to check them out from the library or ordering them online.
She’d write back to Marianne, Long windy paragraphs filled with excitement about the characters and the way the author coiled up the story only to fire it off like a gun
Now, Years later living her big college life, she wonders if she was in love with Marianne.
She feels cool writing to Marianne that she’s reading Marx for class.
She thinks of them at 13 lying under the stars, looking into each other‘s eyes, swearing to remember.
Lola reminds her of Marianne sometimes. Not in the way, she looks or talks or thinks. The way she grabs her hand with her walking and grips onto it.
The first time Lola did that she was so aware of her hand, overcome thinking that Lola could feel her pulse through her hand could feel the sweat for me at the awareness of their skin, rubbing against each other. She was focused on their hands, swinging that she totally zoned out of the conversation. She woke up to Lola laughing at her “ you weren’t listening to a word I just said, were you?”
Nobody has ever made her feel the way Lola does.
She has never taken the time to care about what anybody else thinks. But she goes crazy. Thinking about how Lola sees her.
Recently, on her morning swim, an hour laps at the University pool, she can’t think of anything else.
Her body feels new to her. The way her thighs ripple as she pushes off the wall of the pool. The way the towel feels on her wet skin.

Lola was the first girl she ever slept with.
They met in an algebra class Lola ended up dropping.
Lola Had came up to her while she was daydreaming over some book, the spine too thick to be taken seriously.
She scared the shit out of her, nonchalantly asking her about the algebra homework. Everyone else she encountered so far, and been so reluctant to acknowledge her existence to say they’d seen her around. But Lola has said “ yeah I was sitting behind you I remember because you had a cute little freckle on your wrist and I was trying to see what you’ve written down on your paper. “
Lola has more freckles than her
They have the same freckle on their left wrist and above their left knee.
She likes to imagine someone asking Lola the time and Lola shrugging looking down at her bare wrist. Bare except for the birthmark. She likes to imagine Lola thinking of her when she thinks of time.
She works at the gym and the front desk as people come in and swipe their cards. Sometimes The varsity boys hit on her.
At first it made her blush. Then it made her annoyed.
Now, when this happens she Imagines how Lola would respond to their tactless boring come-ons. She entertains herself this way a lot, imagining how Lola would respond to something.
Sometimes the athletes remind her of her brother, and she sends him a text. She feels sorry for him being so stuck.
Stuck in their silly little town where nothing new ever happens. Stuck in the role he thinks he has to fill. Stuck in teenage angst. Stuck being the black sheep of their artist family.
He spoke on the phone a lot her first few weeks. He wanted to hear everything about her new life. It wasn’t hard to awe him.
But she hadn’t decided how she was going to tell him about Lola yet. And her responses felt deflated when she tried to talk about her classes or parties like they were important.
Nothing felt important and everything felt important.
Nothing besides Lola’s touch, Lola’s eyes, Lola’s laugh, Lola’s stretch marks, piercings and tattoos, and bed spread felt important.
And yet they made everything feel important. The leaves on the trees in the clouds that look like alligators. The Milkshakes she slurped and the protests she learned about in her intro to women’s studies class.

Part of this is because she knows she isn’t a good actress herself, so she’d rather not lie, be caught, or have to extend the conversation by saying things slowly and inadvertently.
Her favorite pair of pants were light blue Levi’s that fit her perfectly, loose enough at the waist to always be comfortable, but somehow tight around her butt. Her favorite T-shirt is a white Grateful Dead tee that belonged to her mom way back. She liked wearing it without a bra. The way the sleeves rolled up at the end where they’ve been cut. She liked the way she spent hours listening to her mom‘s old records and didn’t have to feel like a poser.
