I really enjoyed listening to the different perspective that people have. It is displayed in the way that they speak about their essay and their interpretations of other people’s work
I found the Short Talks writing activity to be pretty challenging, but definitely generative and a great way to start working with experimental prose! I’m realizing that although nonfiction prose is totally my wheelhouse, anything experimental is a struggle for me (which resulted in my “Short Talk on The Difficulty of Writing Experimental Prose as an Assistant). While writing the piece, I figured out how I could take lines from real life and collage them into the prose to make an experimental product.
Our class workshop helped me come up with ways to fix surface level rough spots in my piece that I knew needed work, but also helped me see the true dimensions of my essay through what became full circle and what stayed tangential. The editing process has looked completely different than what I’d thought it would be, because of how invested everyone’s suggestions have been, and yet how different they all are.
I really enjoyed the short talks we did at the beginning of this week, because I think that I can really easily get in my head when writing and the short talks are a great way to get out of that mindset. I loved getting to just explore shorter bits of writing that can be great on their own or could lead to something bigger, and I think they’re also a really cool way to experiment with the intersections of different genres (ie nonfiction, fiction, poetry, prose). I also loved getting to read other people’s essays and hear so many different writing styles and voices!
Through workshopping other people’s work I have learned a lot about the difference between reading as a passive audience member vs. an editor. This has helped me read my own piece with a fresher set of eyes.
Workshopping other peoples work has been helping me think about how to strengthen my own work. I find it very helpful
I have appreciated how people have given feedback this far. I know that sometimes critiques are a hard thing to take, but everyone has been very constructive this far and appreciative of all the writers in our class and their work. I also think that critiques have helped me notice things I sometimes write off as small or interchangeable as much larger things that can change entire pieces of work. I like to see how we help each other elevate our work and always explain why, it is very helpful for authors that way.
I enjoyed listening to other people’s essays this week. I always enjoy hearing other people’s storytelling voice. I think it shows you a lot about the type of person they are and what they notice. It also makes me think about how I can improve my voice.
I really enjoyed being introduced to the workshop process this week. It has been really fun to read other essays and have in-class discussions about peer work! It is a unique opportunity that I haven’t had before, and I am really enjoying it so far.
The workshops this week helped demonstrate to me the value of saying a lot in not many words. I was shown the importance of not over explaining as well as examples of how to do so while still conveying everything meant to be conveyed. Furthermore, brief moments and short sentences can be extremely effective in aspiring emotions in readers. I have a tendency to overwrite so this weeks workshops have been extremely helpful fof me.
It’s been really interesting to workshop essays as a full class, and I’m interested to see how the small group workshops will be similar or different. It’s been a lot of fun to be able to see so many people’s essays in quick succession, and while it means a lot of letters to write, I think my critiques and comments are also improving as I write more of them.
