This week made me think a lot about the rhythm of poems and how everyone reads them differently. It’s important to show where necessary breaks are in the form of the poem because as we saw with Yas’s poem there’s a lot of different ways to read them.
I think all the exercises that were done this week generated some very interesting poems I would have never written on my own. Especially when writing about art I found myself writing a story to the piece. It was hard to get out of this narrative prose idea in to a more poetic verse situation but when I focused on emotions and quick thoughts exhibited by the characters I had made up in my mind very interesting pieces of work were created.
I have really never written poetry before but it was nice to be able to explore that. I also really liked the found poem and was proud of what I came up with for that.
Writing poetry has never been something I have explored much so this week has been really interesting to me and helped me to explore a genre of writing that I have never touched in depth. I admittedly have struggled with the unit at times and haven’t always been the happiest with what I have written but the struggle and the pushing of and expansion of my writing has been really fulfilling. I particularly enjoyed the exercise of writing poetry inspired by pieces of music as I found the challenge of finding the emotions and feelings of a song and somehow then transforming them into words to be a uniquely moving yet difficult task.
I found it a little difficult to come up with poems relating to the art and music we used as prompts this week. My first impulse is to take notes and describe the work, and it was hard to think beyond it or imagine something new. I think I benefitted more from the exercise where we generated a long list of words from the specific prompts and worked them into a poem. Maybe I work best with a little bit of specific input.
I really enjoyed all of the poetry readings we did this week, and learning about all the different types and forms of poetry was very interesting. I feel a bit frustrated with my own work because I feel like I’m still not the most comfortable writing poetry yet and I find myself being unhappy with a lot of what I produce, but I do want to continue to work on it and improve as much as I can.
Writing poetry to music was the best experience for me so far, and it’s something that’s always been recommended for prose, that I hadn’t thought would work for verse. Like Bella said in her post about the art we looked at, the music inspired a very specific feeling that could then branch into a poem, and maybe even one that felt completely different than the original piece. It really covered how much of these poetry exercises are about taking the outside world and refracting it using your own spontaneous thoughts and ideas. Like with the found poem. It’s very cool to realize that’s whats happening.
My favorite exercise from this week was creating poems from art pieces. I found that the art pieces brought up a certain feeling or idea in me and that a poem was able to fall out of that. While the final poem may have had nothing to do with the art, it was fun to see how inspiration can strike. I also enjoyed reading the different forms of poetry and learning about how they are constructed.
I have really enjoyed being able to explore poetry more this week. It has been really fun to learn about all the various forms of poetry and practice writing poems through the various in-class exercises. I am looking forward to the in-class workshops next week!
