  1. I really liked having a unit dedicated to learning about and exploring poetry. Prior to this class, I had written poetry only occasionally and was never really confident with what I wrote. This course has allowed me to feel much for comfortable writing poetry and explore the many ways poems can present themselves.

  2. Poetry for me was something that I used to only really be able to do when I was going through a very emotional period in my life, but that made it so that when I looked back on my poetry I had written a few months later, I really disliked it because it was so emotionally-charged and not very good. The poetry unit really helped me to feel like I can write poetry that I like, without having to be super emotional to do it. I learned a lot about the different forms of poetry, how it can be structured, the intersections of poetry and other types of writing, etc. I am really excited to continue to write poetry and work on it.

  3. I learned a lot through this unit. I enjoyed pushing myself to create works in different styles of poem with different prompts. My piece “Care” pushed me to be okay with sharing stories about my past while also creating structure within the piece that makes it feel complete!

  4. I was admittedly very nervous going into the poetry unit. I had convinced myself throughout my school years that poetry was some terribly daunting task/form of writing that I couldn’t possibly accomplish well. This unit effectively dispelled my preconceived notions about poetry as I began to see the sheer amount of forms poetry can take and the sheer amount of things that could inspire poetry. I’ve ended up discovering new poetry forms I love, like pantoums, as well as new sources of poetic inspirations, like music and paintings. Overall, this unit I’ve had to remind myself that it is inevitable that I will have failed poems but that just because a poem has failed that doesn’t mean there isn’t a piece of that failure that can be transformed into something successful that I can be proud of.

  5. I think the biggest takeaway for me from the poetry unit is that poetry can take so many forms, and that form is so important in conveying meaning or ideas. I enjoyed learning about and reading all the different forms and experimenting with writing in different ways. I was most intimidated by the poetry unit, but it was actually my favorite part of the class. Writing in these short spurts allowed me to get lots of ideas and stories out quickly which spurred a lot of creativity in me.

  6. It’s been really revealing dissecting published poetry, and assessing if criticism can ever be completely objective. Being challenged in writing poetry both allowed for me to give credit where credit is due, and find the places where a poem is being limited. Having my own work examined with this same precision felt extremely productive going into revisions.
