M. Boursier was a student of Ambroise Par\u00e9, so Louise Bourgeois took a lot of inspiration from both of them in her work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bourgeois quickly rose to be one of the most prominent midwives of the time, and even became a midwife for the court of King Henri IV for 27 years because she was specifically requested by the queen and other royal women. She also assisted in the birth of Louis XIII.<sup data-fn=\"cdc76611-ea1d-488a-90bc-5422041b510f\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#cdc76611-ea1d-488a-90bc-5422041b510f\" id=\"cdc76611-ea1d-488a-90bc-5422041b510f-link\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bourgeois was the first French female author to publish a medical text, and her most revered work is <em>Diverse Observations on Sterility <\/em>of which there are three volumes. It was translated into Dutch, German, and English, and is still studied today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bourgeois is unique because of her women-centered approach to birthing and healthcare in general. In her midwifery, she focused on the needs and wants of the women giving birth, including their choice of position (bed or birthing chair), proper coverage and blankets during birth, and lubrication and medicine to reduce birthing pains.<sup data-fn=\"fb74523a-cf98-4806-a3e4-74ea21928e29\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#fb74523a-cf98-4806-a3e4-74ea21928e29\" id=\"fb74523a-cf98-4806-a3e4-74ea21928e29-link\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also did lots of work around women\u2019s menstrual cycles and recognized the loss of period as a sign of pregnancy, as well as recognizing the mood swings and food cravings that can also be accompanied by either pregnancy or different parts of a woman\u2019s cycle.<sup data-fn=\"76aaf7e7-7668-4b8a-b121-405b7529dabe\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#76aaf7e7-7668-4b8a-b121-405b7529dabe\" id=\"76aaf7e7-7668-4b8a-b121-405b7529dabe-link\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the life of Bourgeois, the medical field started moving away from the profession of midwifery, which in turn, started to reduce access for women into medical professions. Fran\u00e7ois Olive noted that \u201cwomen started to accuse midwives of incompetence\u201d<sup data-fn=\"880af67b-b77d-42bb-b9ed-472f6670bcd5\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#880af67b-b77d-42bb-b9ed-472f6670bcd5\" id=\"880af67b-b77d-42bb-b9ed-472f6670bcd5-link\">5<\/a><\/sup> and that medical spaces started to rely more on advanced tools which limited its accessibility and altered what was seen as \u201creal\u201d science and medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-footnotes\"><li id=\"df61bf2a-521f-4fa3-8cae-4bce656acddf\">Bridgette A.
