{"id":355,"date":"2018-10-27T21:02:23","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T21:02:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ger297-f18\/?p=355"},"modified":"2018-11-28T17:53:51","modified_gmt":"2018-11-28T17:53:51","slug":"stollwercks-sammel-album-no-2-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ger297-f18\/355\/","title":{"rendered":"Stollwerck&#8217;s Sammel-Album No. 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Picture 1: On Reconnaissance.<br \/>\nHans and his comrades go farther and farther in enemy lands,<br \/>\nBut in face of the Germans the French do not stand.<br \/>\nHans tries to find them and hurries ahead<br \/>\nThrough forest, towns and houses he treads.<br \/>\nThen finally near Spichern in the early morning light<br \/>\nHe finds the French entrenched and ready for a fight.<\/p>\n<p>Picture 2: Storming the Spicherer Hills.<br \/>\nHe tells his commander what he has found,<br \/>\nThe troops rejoice, great joy abounds,And soon the Germans will the French engage<br \/>\nIn Spichern where they\u2019ll show their rage.<br \/>\nThey bravely cut a path uphill<br \/>\nWith their guns and with their iron will<br \/>\nAt the front of the fight little Hans we can see<br \/>\nLeading the troops to victory!<\/p>\n<p>Picture 3: A Glorious Victory.<br \/>\nHigh atop the Spichern hills the fighting rages on<br \/>\nWith bayonet and rifle butt until the fight is won.<br \/>\nThe Germans\u2019 blows are hard and cause the French to flee<br \/>\nThey run downhill and seek to hide below among the trees.<br \/>\nThe Germans fire after them, then fire once again,<br \/>\n\u201cThe battle is won! Victory is ours!\u201d proclaim the German men.<\/p>\n<p>Picture 4: Requisitioning in the Villages.<br \/>\nThe fleeing enemy is pursued, the victors are close behind,<br \/>\nAnd on the way of their pursuit an empty town they find.<br \/>\nAnd then since food is running low they search throughout the town<br \/>\nBut usually, despite their work, no foodstuffs can be found.<br \/>\nOur Hans, however, knows the hunt and looks in the right places.<br \/>\nHe returns to camp with more supplies to all the happy faces.<\/p>\n<p>Picture 5: Pursuing the Fleeing Enemy.<br \/>\nAnd so the march continues, the French are still in flight<br \/>\nAnd though supplies run short, pursuit through day and night.<br \/>\nWe chase the red-pants Frenchmen, like hunters stalk their deer,<br \/>\nSo far and so relentless, till Paris is quite near.<br \/>\nHans is now quite happy, the goal is now not far,<br \/>\nHe laughs and jokes with his comrades throughout the tiring march.<\/p>\n<p>Picture 6: Bring the Mail to the Troops.<br \/>\nThe soldiers are most happy, when the mail from home arrives.<br \/>\nThe letters and gifts from home are the passed out to all the smiles.<br \/>\nBut since the foe would also like to commandeer these things,<br \/>\nA military escort must accompany all the things we bring.<br \/>\nSo Hans must sit there on the wagon, rifle in his hand<br \/>\nAnd sees to it that the post arrives within the foeman\u2019s land.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Picture 1: On Reconnaissance.
