Overview of Laser Cutting at the Imaging Center

Overview

A laser cutter uses a vector graphics file (such as an Adobe Illustrator file) to make complex cuts and engravings in flat materials like chipboard and wood. The IC’s laser cutter can handle materials with a maximum size of 24″ x 36″. Only materials expressly approved by the IC may be cut on the laser cutter.

The IC will work with faculty to set up class laser cutting projects. We can also assist students seeking to work on individual projects, schedule permitting. All laser cutting work must happen with an IC staff member present in the office. Email ic-u@smith.edu with laser cutter-related inquiries.
