Check that the correct scanner is visible in the scanner drop-down menu. This will reset Silverfast&#8217;s previous settings to the default.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1023\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/resetframe.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/resetframe.png 572w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/resetframe-196x300.png 196w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Choose <\/span><b>Reflective, Transparency<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, or <\/span><b>Wide\u00a0<\/b><b>Transparency<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reflective<\/strong> is used for non-transparent materials such as prints<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transparency<\/strong> is used for transparent materials such as slides, negatives, and film<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wide Transparency<\/strong> is used when scanning negatives placed directly on the glass, without using a holder<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are scanning transparent materials, remove the white cover over the transparency unit. You can click the <strong>Frame<\/strong> button to duplicate this box to create multiple scanning frames. The duplicate frames will share the same settings as the original, so make sure you have your scan dimensions and picture settings where you want them for each frame before your final scan. Active frames will be highlighted red.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1028\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/prescan_2-959x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/prescan_2-959x1024.png 959w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/prescan_2-281x300.png 281w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/prescan_2-768x820.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/prescan_2-1438x1536.png 1438w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/prescan_2.png 1488w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>First, there are a number of settings under the scan dimensions section to set:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Name: <\/strong>use this window to set the title of your scan<\/li>\n<li><strong>Path: <\/strong>use this window to select where your scan will save by clicking the file icon<\/li>\n<li><strong>Format: <\/strong>for most scans, use the custom setting<\/li>\n<li><strong>Preset (Resolution): <\/strong>Use the drop-down menu or type in a number in the box to the right to choose the resolution. Typically this should be 300 or 600 ppi. Double that resolution for slides and negatives, so 1200 or 2400 ppi. Leave the resolution slider as it is.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Canvas Width and Height:\u00a0<\/strong>You can skip these settings for most scans<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1027\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/scandimensions.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"482\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/scandimensions.png 719w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/scandimensions-300x249.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Next, navigate to the picture settings section, you can use the midtone, contrast, and saturation sliders to adjust your the final scan result. There should be space on either side of the curve in the histogram<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1030\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/picturesettings-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/picturesettings-1.png 723w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/picturesettings-1-267x300.png 267w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;re happy with your settings, press the <strong>Scan<\/strong> button in the upper menu to begin the final scan. Silverfast will begin scanning the image within the active frame. If you have multiple frames, click the <strong>Batch Scan<\/strong> button to scan them all at once.<\/p>\n<p>The progress bar at the bottom left of the window will show you when your final scan is finished.<\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1032\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/finalscan-1024x182.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/finalscan-1024x182.png 1024w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/finalscan-300x53.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/finalscan-768x136.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/finalscan.png 1364w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2>Scanning Large Images<\/h2>\n<p>If the item you&#8217;re scanning is larger than the scanner bed, you can use Photoshop&#8217;s Photomerge feature to merge multiple scans of the same image. For instructions on using Photomerge, see <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/using-photomerge-when-scanning-large-images\/\">Using Photomerge When Scanning Large Images<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Halftone Images: De-screening and Unsharp Masking<\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;re scanning a halftone image (typically printed images from older books or magazines) use the Descreening function to reduce the halftone dot pattern. Use this function after you complete the prescan but before you complete the final scan.<\/p>\n<p>Click the <strong>Descreen<\/strong> button, this will open the Descreening Menu:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Under <strong>Screen (lpi)<\/strong>, choose the relevant option &#8211; choose <strong>Newspaper<\/strong>, <strong>Magazine<\/strong>, or <strong>Art Print.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Under <strong>Retain Text<\/strong>, choose <strong>Light<\/strong>, <strong>Medium<\/strong>, <strong>Strong<\/strong>, <strong>None<\/strong>, or <strong>Custom.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Expert settings under the graduation cap icon allow for additional adjustment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1036 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/descreen-1024x617.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/descreen-1024x617.png 1024w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/descreen-300x181.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/descreen-768x463.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/ickb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/890\/2024\/09\/descreen.png 1150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you are descreening, you may also want to add an unsharp mask.
