{"id":48,"date":"2023-05-11T00:13:50","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T04:13:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/itsjusthistory\/?p=48"},"modified":"2023-05-22T09:02:36","modified_gmt":"2023-05-22T13:02:36","slug":"papal-bulls-dum-diversas-romanus-pontifex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/itsjusthistory\/papal-bulls-dum-diversas-romanus-pontifex\/","title":{"rendered":"Papal Bulls: Dum Diversas &amp; Romanus Pontifex"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On June 18, 1452, Pope Nicholas V, issues a statement (called a &#8220;papal bull&#8221;) called the <em>Dum Diversas<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Dum Diversas<\/em> gives King Alfonso V of Portugal permission to reduce any &#8220;nonbelievers&#8221; to perpetual slavery.<\/p>\n<p>The Portuguese take this and run, and begin enslaving West Africans, which gets beyond ugly very quickly.<\/p>\n<p>On January 5, 1455, Pope Nicholas V issues the bull <em>Romanus Pontifex<\/em>, which further encourages the enslavement of African people and non-Christian natives in the New World.<\/p>\n<p>This is just the beginning.
