{"id":98,"date":"2018-03-02T16:29:38","date_gmt":"2018-03-02T16:29:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/japanese-translations\/?page_id=98"},"modified":"2021-04-10T03:40:32","modified_gmt":"2021-04-10T03:40:32","slug":"about-project","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/japanese-translations\/about-project\/","title":{"rendered":"About Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Project<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this project, students translate Youtube videos created by Japanese college students and upload the English translations and captions to the videos on Youtube.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This project provides students with different learning experiences from translating texts. \u00a0For example, the translation needs to be synchronized with the video clips in terms of timing, length of the sentence, choice of expressions. \u00a0It also needs to be comprehensible for public audiences who are not necessarily knowledgeable about Japan or Japanese culture. \u00a0Students apply their knowledge of Japanese language and culture to translation, using their creativity to make the best possible translation of the videos for their target audiences. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the most interesting and exciting parts of this project is that students can broadcast their contributions to the public online. \u00a0It is a good way of being aware of the audience when translating, as well as practicing public scholarship. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Goals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Develop basic skills in translating videos (e.g., transcribing videos, using technology to add captions).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Analyze the differences between the languages and cultures, as well as take the target audience into consideration when translating.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learn about copyright and ownership when translating videos online. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Practice and experience public scholarship.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Structure &#8211; emphasizing social constructivism<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students choose one video clip created by students from the Department of Information and Media at the Official YouTube Channel of Doshisha Women\u2019s College of Liberal Arts (DWC). Work in pairs on one video clip. \u00a0Create transcription of the video, two drafts of the translation, and one final version. \u00a0Present the drafts during in-class peer review sessions (one in the midterm, one in the later in the semester) before finalizing.
