Story Maps of South Central Los Angeles

Land is the material source of autonomy. It bestows communities with the ability to shape their destinies, fostering self-determination and independence. In a world dominated by capitalist ideologies, where everything is seen as a potential commodity to be bought and sold, land stands as a symbol of resistance. Its intrinsic value transcends the mere monetary worth imposed upon it. The connection between people and the land they inhabit goes beyond economic exchange; it carries deep-rooted cultural, historical, and spiritual ties that resist reduction to mere market transactions. When communities have access to their own land, they gain control over their destinies, making decisions about how to use it in ways that align with their values and needs. This autonomy in land usage guarantees that the community benefits from the utilization of its resources, rather than succumbing to vulnerabilities and risks established by external interests seeking short-term gains through exploitation. By embracing the true essence of land and understanding its significance beyond a marketable commodity, societies can become more equitable, sustainable, and resilient.

As you explore the story maps consider the ways in which communities in these story maps are fighting for their right to land and using it as a means for self-determination. Reflect on the connections between access to land and environmental justice, and how the struggles for land are intertwined with broader struggles for social, economic, and political equality keeping in mind the unique power of land to resist capitalist forces.
