Food pantry resources – Holyoke

Margaret’s Pantry by Providence Ministries

In 1980 Margaret McCleary, at 14, worked at the Mercy Hospital, where she noticed many homeless in starvation. After joining the “Sister of  Providence,” Sr. Margaret carried out her vision of giving a warm meal to anyone who needed it, no questions asked. Thus, Kate’s kitchen was opened to serve the most vulnerable individual in the community.

Providence  Ministries has become one of the largest non-profit organizations connecting social services in the Pioneer Valley. It provides pantries for three meals and three snacks for four days to those who need them. (PM).

The Providence Ministries serve the people in Holyoke, and communities in Western MA, except for Springfield; however, they serve Springfield residents with emergency needs due to fire or other tragedies.

Salvation Army Holyoke Corps

Emergency Food Pantry

By Salvation Army Massachusetts Division- Holyoke Corps Community Center

Emergency Food Pantry has been working in favor of the community since 1865. First, it was named the East London Christian Mission, now globally recognized as The Salvation Army.

William Booth, an itinerate pastor, created this organization from a grassroots effort that saw “Lights in darkest England, Security from fire, Fair wages for fair work” (TSA, Motto). He referred to this organization as a volunteer army, ready to serve its neighbors with conviction and without discrimination. The TSA said, “their mission was to help others in Jesus’ name, meeting their physical and spiritual needs” (TSA). Thus, the Salvation Army preserves William Booth’s Army structure, so its Officers and Leaders are appointed pastors.

The Salvation Army Mission is to serve at home and internationally, now serving the most vulnerable people in 130 countries. Thank you, Salvation Army.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY at St. Mary’s Church of Westfield, MA.

“A Roman Catholic Community Serving God and Neighbor”

St. Vincent De Paul Society at St. Mary’s Church of Westfield has been nursing those struggling with their utilities or who have lost their jobs, offering them contributions to mitigate their suffering.

St. Vincent De Paul Society at St. Mary’s has assisted people with medical emergencies and unexpected circumstances, such as paying for funeral expenses. In addition, St Vicent De Paul has helped people with other emergency bills, for example, paying an overdue bill or rent, as well as preparing them and finding clothes for job interviews.
