The Apples Story: Place Value

In Putting Apples in Their Proper Place learners work with large quantities of apples and devise ways to count them by putting them into groups and then counting the total value of the groups.  Ultimately they discover that grouping by 10’s is very convenient because it corresponds to the way we write numerals. Orders for large quantities of apples arise and then they get modified.  Learners use the grouping of tens to solve problems calling for addition and subtraction of quantities that grow to over 100. Apples in Their Proper Place deepens and solidifies learner’s understanding and ability to compute and solve problems using our base 10 number system.
