These figures make it undeniable that incarceration plays a significant role in shaping the U.S.\u2019s national identity. To understand how mass incarceration became embedded in U.S. heritage, many historic sites seek to preserve this history for the public\u2014often by repurposing former carceral sites as educational spaces. This project explores how incarceration is interpreted at U.S. heritage sites, why the public engages with these narratives, and how we navigate the ethical challenges they pose.
