What should I do?<\/b><\/div>\n<div>Please look at my recommendation letter request guidelines <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/newland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/382\/2019\/06\/Recommendation-Request-Guidelines.pdf\">here<\/a>. In general, I ask that you request a letter at least three weeks before the submission deadline.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>Are you taking new advisees?<\/b><\/div>\n<div>I am accepting new advisees. Please fill out the gov department major\/minor declaration form <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSeN5pXR3-Df0YzlFfAz1Mnn1tV9Gt1au25a40Err6tGWkDGOA\/viewform\">here<\/a>, and the department will assign you an advisor (you may indicate a preference for particular faculty member(s) on the form).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>Are you hiring research assistants?\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div>I regularly hire undergraduate research assistants, typically at the beginning of each semester. The students I hire are usually advanced readers of Chinese (simplified or traditional characters), and\/or have taken and done well in at least one of my courses, and\/or have a demonstrated interest in the politics of mainland China or Taiwan.
