The artist currently resides in New York and New Mexico. His paintings can be found in the permanent collections of more than thirty museums. He has been a professor of art at Columbia University since 1994 and has had numerous solo as well as group exhibitions. As Amenoff is deeply attracted to the physical materials and processes of painting, his choice of creating monotypes, a medium that had not yet been attempted at the Smith print workshop, seemed natural for his workshop.

During this workshop, Master Printer Maurice Sanchez introduced his innovative method of producing multiple strong impressions from a single monotype plate (which generally only produces one strong impression and a lighter “ghost” impression). This process also allows the artist to work in a variety of materials including litho inks, graphite, and both chalk and oil pastels. Sanchez used this technique during subsequent workshops with Mary Frank, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Joan Snyder, and Elizabeth Murray.

Gregory Amenoff.
