"The Sportsman's Last Visit" by William Sidney Mount

About

My name is Allison Smith and I am a junior at Smith College. This website comprises the research and materials which I used to create my Archives Capstone Final Project. The inspiration for my topic began when I heard a costume professor of mine say “silk apron,” and I simply had to know more.

The phrase “silk apron” caught my attention as two words which sound almost like an oxymoron. I felt compelled to learn more and understand their purpose. This website and exhibit attempt to bring silk aprons into the greater history of women and gender, material culture, and fashion history. It also aims to contrast these extravagant aprons with less fancy ones, specifically maid or servant cotton aprons, which is what many people first think of when they hear the word “apron.”

In each page are a description of the apron, some historical context, and some analysis about the significance of the apron. I hope to share my passion for historical clothing and encourage others to see clothes as important within history as well.

Enjoy!
