The journal is student-led and peer-reviewed. The ethos of Sátya is to reflect Smith College’s philosophy department which is multidisciplinary and multicultural. The purpose of Sátya is to promote philosophical discourse and thought. Sátya is dedicated to providing its readers with quality works that make philosophy accessible to a wide audience. Undergraduates from all five college institutions are invited to submit their work for review. Sátya welcomes essays related to the broad topic of philosophy.

Sátya is a Sanskrit word that loosely means the ethical concept and virtue of truth. Sátya became the namesake of this journal to pay homage to the unique Philosophy department at Smith College, which is committed to teaching cross-cultural philosophy. Additionally, through the philosophical dialogue and community this journal fosters, Sátya offers boundless truths and essences, prompting our readers to question and probe the world around them.

We invite you to read, ponder, and, hopefully, enjoy.

Click for Our Latest Issue

WHY SÁTYA?

During the fall of 2022, there was a discussion among a handful of students to start up the Smith undergraduate philosophy journal again, after the pandemic halted the continuation of the journal. After a bit of reflection, we decided to change the name from Eudaimonia (meaning “good spirit” in Greek) to Sátya (meaning “essential truth” in Sanskrit). We decided to make this change for several reasons, the most important reason was the desire to reflect the Smith philosophy department’s course offerings and intentional emphasis on non-western philosophy and thought. This unique educational opportunity is one that we are proud to reflect not only in the name of the journal but in our collective attitude toward philosophy: to maintain a passion for curiosity and a strong drive to expand our understanding of philosophy and the broader world.

Looking for our old website?

Click below for the original Eudaimonia journal website!

Old Website

Contact SÁTYA

<fieldset class="hidden-fields-container">
</fieldset>

Your name

Your email

Your message (optional)

Sátya is the official Philosophy Journal of Smith College.
