Where I Am #1

Where I Am #1

Director’s Note

Where I Am is a collection of pieces, created from a project by Jon Caris and Tracy Tien of Smith’s Spatial Analysis Lab. In the summer of 2020, they solicited anonymous responses to a series of questions about what Smith students and others were seeing and experiencing, then created a map of those responses. I took some of those responses, and asked a number of actors each to treat one of them as a monologue–to perform as the person they imagine giving those answers. I love seeing the range of approaches these performers brought to the material. I like to imagine how it might feel for one of the original respondents to see their own answers taken as a script, and performed.
