Tristesses de la lune

By  Charles Baudelaire (French)

Ce soir, la lune rêve avec plus de paresse;

Sorrows of the Moon

Translated by Joséphine Van Renterghem and Jessica Simon

Tonight, the moon dreams more lazily than ever,
Like a beauty reclining on piles of cushions deep,
Who caresses, her hand as light as a feather,
The curve of her breast before falling asleep;

On the soft avalanche of silken cushions,
Dying, she revels in delightful swoons
And lets her eyes wander over white visions
That rise into the azure like asphodel blooms.

When wrapped in languid slumber’s robe,
She lets a quiet tear run down this globe,
A devoted poet, admirer of the sleepless night,

Collects in his hand this pale crystal,
This shimmering teardrop resembling an opal,
And hides it in his heart, out of the sun’s sight.
