My name is Catherine Bradley, and I recently joined the water inquiry team. I am a sophomore at Smith College, majoring in history with a minor in education, and I am very excited to begin working on this project.<\/p>\n<p>Over the winter break, I took a week-long interterm course co-taught by Professor Berner at Smith\u2019s MacLeish Field Station in Whately, MA. The course, titled \u201cInterpreting the New England Landscape,\u201d encouraged us to interact with our natural surroundings in many different ways. \u00a0Inspired by the week, we developed two snow themed adventures, perfect for this time of year.<\/p>\n<p><b>How Cold\u00a0<em>is<\/em>\u00a0Snow?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In our first snow inquiry, students bundle up and head outside, armed with easy-to-read tube thermometers. With these thermometers, students can measure the temperature of the air, the snow, and the ground underneath (a little digging may be required here!). \u00a0Try this in a few different spots on the school grounds: \u00a0in the sun and the shade; near the school building; near rocky outcroppings; around the playground.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_187\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-187\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/waterinquiry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/485\/2015\/02\/img_6616new.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-187 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.smith.edu\/waterinquiry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/485\/2015\/02\/img_6616new.jpg\" alt=\"img_6616new\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-187\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A student checking the temperature in the air to compare to the temperature in and under the snow.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What\u2019s do you notice about the temperatures?<\/li>\n<li>Can you find any patterns in temperature? Any surprises?<\/li>\n<li>If you were a small animal, like a mouse or a vole, where would you go? Why?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>What Happens to Water in Winter?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Make some class predictions before going outside:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Where will you look for ice around the school grounds?<\/li>\n<li>Where will you look for liquid water?<\/li>\n<li>Do you think ice floats or sinks in water? What makes you say that?<\/li>\n<li>Imagine&#8211;if ice sank in water what would change?<\/li>\n<li>Which do you think is colder: ice or the water under the ice?\u00a0How could we find this out?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Are there icicles on your building or frozen water on your school grounds? \u00a0Take students out to investigate places where ice forms: \u00a0Where do you see ice? What&#8217;s going on in these places? \u00a0If you&#8217;re lucky enough to be near a pond or running stream, take the temperature of the air above the ice and the water below the ice (you may want to tie a string to the thermometer if the water is deep).
