They hoped to recruit 600 college students to work in 80 locations in six Southern states. The groups sponsoring \u201cFreedom Christmas\u201d were the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Congress of Racial Equality, and the NAACP.
