Afro-Am Studies major approved for Fall 1969 by faculty<\/p>\n
In a special faculty meeting, the African American Studies major was approved in spring 1969 to begin in the fall semester. This initiative was the first of a series of nine curricular demands submitted by the BSA. The proposal for the major was considered ahead of the remaining demands so that preparation could begin as soon as possible. It was accompanied by a concurrent demand for more courses related to blacks studies and a \u201ca drastic increase in the number of Black faculty.\u201d Considered most important was a temporary plan for a supervisory committee of BSA and faculty members to oversee these measures until the major was fully established. Other demands focused especially on bringing more Black students and faculty to Smith and the steps required to do so, as well as expanding the scope of study abroad and away programs to include African and historically Black universities. According to the BSA statement, the \u201cdemands will add to the character, usefulness, and vitality of the college community.\u201d <\/i><\/p>\n
