Art at the Smith College MacLeish Field Station

Homestead

The homestead is the remnants of a house located right off of Poplar Hill Road near the highest point of the field station. The forest has reclaimed the area, but there are many holes in the ground and rock walls surrounding the site. There are also pieces of rusted metal and an old well. It is a great place to explore and look for evidence of the people that used to live there. This is a great place to think about the historical use of land in the field station, and how nature has reclaimed it. It is also a place to imagine what it would be like to settle and live in these woods.
