This week, I participated in a lively discussion with our Becoming Foreign class. We analyzed the importance of intercultural competence, and examined various introduction tactics abroad. How personal is too personal? This was a question I asked myself frequently during the class. How much information can one disclose, and in what setting? Additionally, we highlighted specific learning objectives as stated in the syllabus. However, two points that resonated with me include that of questioning my own cultural values, and cultivating sensitivity towards others of differing cultural backgrounds. I believe that we can learn more about ourselves by way of our interactions with others; I feel that our differences can oftentimes unite us. Upon returning from a trip, international or otherwise, I constantly find myself in a state of self-discovery and independence. Additionally, it is essential to travel with a tolerant and open mindset, particularly if one country seems radically different one’s own. It is essential to identify cultural differences in order to understand them. However, this differentiation should be done with sensitivity and curiosity. Although I can recognize historical landscapes and various popular songs, I have a great deal of learning to do with regard to social standings in various countries, including that of gender roles. It is necessary to remember that certain countries hold regulations that cannot be changed. Moreover, our class discussions illuminated essential aspects of the “foreign” experience; meaning, the difficulties and confusing moments that one might face if studying or traveling abroad. Furthermore, we touched on the importance of language and how this ability to communicate can aid our transitions, and ultimately, enrich our traveling experiences.
