I think learning about the different ways in which we can develop skills such as critical thinking, attitudinal, and knowledge skills is crucial for gaining intercultural competence. My goal through this class is to hone in on which skills need improving and which ones I may be coming in with but could still use further strengthening through discussions, new perspectives, and various other learning opportunities. When I take the time to reflect on my past experiences, I notice I am open and accepting of cultures different than my own, for example I would say I am able to “observe and analyze culturally defined situations without being judgmental.” I also feel like I am able to “question and asses my own cultural values and beliefs” when prompted, and so I want to work on doing that more often and on my own, and to find ways to make it a more integral part of my everyday life. I would especially like to work on developing my “knowledge skills” such as understanding aspects of cultural traditions more deeply. I addition, because I have a family member who seems to have good knowledge skills but lacking in critical thinking and attitudinal skills, I hope to bring my new understanding of the tools we use to cultivate these skills and the language to help me articulate what I’ve learned to this family member in hopes of opening their mind and heart to be more accepting of cultures different from their own.
