This article reminded me that I’m not the only person living in this world. I share this world with billions of people and we all communicate differently. When I first came to the US from Tanzania I was so confused by the way people acted. Once I was walking on my street and my landlord waved at me. But instead of waving back, i ran to her. She just looked at me surprised. I learned later that the American wave, which signified “come here” in Tanzania meant “hi” in the US. When I first came to the US, I saw children making eye contact with adults. I thought this was extremely disrespectful because In my culture it’s not nice to make eye contact with those older than. In school, the teacher thought I was rude because I never looked at her in the face when she was talking. Later I learned eye contact in the US meant you were listening. Communication can be expressed in many ways. The clothes we were can also be a form of nonverbal expression. Wearing colorful clothes can tell a one story and if you wear black all the time that tells a different story of who you are.
