My knowledge of other cultures has improved a lot in these last six weeks. I am more aware of other people around me and how they might communicate based on their cultures. Before this class I always thought what people did that I wasn’t familiar with was weird.. For example, when I saw someone eating an octopus, I always looked at them as if they were creatures from a different universe. Now I can talk about the individual role of family members and the importance of birth order. For example, in Korea who ever is older is respected, even if they are just one year older than you are. I can also talk about different education systems. For example, in France the school days are longer than the US and their lectures are not based on discussion but rather memorization is heavy emphasis. I can understand why some people like working together. Some countries are collective, which means they prefer working in groups. Other countries individualism is important. In Japan, collectivism is extremely important whether it be at work, school, or at home.
