Dressing the Invisible: A History of Smith College Housekeepers’ Uniforms

Support Smith Housekeepers

Ever since uniforms were first introduced for Smith maids in 1912, Smith housekeepers have worked to gain control and input over what they wear. Today, Local 211, the Smith housekeeping and dining workers union, is negotiating a new contract. One of their demands is to have more control over their uniforms. The current uniforms are uncomfortable and make housekeepers’ jobs more difficult because they are ill-fitting and made of low-quality materials. What can you do to support the housekeepers in their demands to dress with dignity?
