I’ve not been doing fantastic in terms of keeping on top of assignments, but I really appreciate the time we have to analyze Citizen. It’s just a beautiful and moving work and diving into it feels productive when I’m not feeling that productive at all.
I enjoyed Tuesday’s class at the art museum. I have been to the museum a few times but never considered the art pieces we did a deep dive into. It is always fun to look at an art piece from another perspective. Hearing everyone’s thoughts on how they viewed certain pieces and interpretations was fascinating to me. I also enjoyed the discussion on Citizen and Do the Right Thing. It never occurred to me how the use of music in Do the Right Thing is woven into the plot of the movie and how it can be symbolic. Leaving the class with the question of ‘where do we go from here?’ was very mind taxing and I still wonder.
I’ve never been in the SCMA before, so going for class was really engaging! I enjoyed the first activity we did with comparing and contrasting the two photos; it really made me think about how we all perceive mediums.
Additionally, the discussion we had about some of the pieces of artwork in Citizen was super helpful for research; expanding my understanding and appreciation of the power of artwork.
I won’t lie, when we first started talking about Citizen, I feel like I didn’t have many thoughts about the piece. But now the more we discuss the book, the more I realize just how much there is to see. I feel like every time I open a new page, there is something else to discuss and a new idea being explored or adding layers onto something previously established. Everything is so meticulous and methodical. I love how it is a living document and how it changes as time goes on, yet still remains modern and up to date while preserving history and time. It is all very cool and fun to discuss!
My biggest takeaway from this week is that I’m beginning to understand and appreciate the multimedia form of Citizen a lot more. I was not as open to embracing avant-garde because of my preconceived notions of it being kind of pretentious and elitist especially in terms of the art. But, in continuing our discussion of the lyric, visiting the SCMA, and watching Do The Right Thing, I’m changing my mind to believe that the experimental form makes the text more accessible in a lot of ways. Taking in images is a different and more innate cognitive process than the acquired one of reading, so the associated emotional response can be sparked in everyone and interpreted based on individual schemas. I think that is actually quite cool, and I’m more excited to explore this in my research and reflection about Citizen.
I really enjoyed our visit to the SCMA on Tuesday and analyzing the artwork as a class, because I feel like it gave me some inspiration for essay 3. I also found myself appreciating Do The Right Thing more after our discussion on Thursday, which I wish we had more time to talk about, but I’m looking forward to listening to everyone’s creative projects next week!
I really enjoyed the opportunity to go to SCMA this week! I actually had never gotten around to visiting the art museum before, and the little taste of material I got to see made me really interested in visiting on my own someday when I have the time. I understand how the art relates to Citizen in particular, but think it would also have been interesting to take advantage of SCMA visits earlier in the semester as well.
Like with the Special Collections class last week, it was nice to extend the themes and discussions of our class to the art at the SCMA. While I had seen some of the art pieces we looked at before on previous visits to the museum, spending more time with them and thinking about them in terms of the texts we’ve read in the course like Citizen made me appreciate the pieces even more and want to explore more of the pieces in the museum in that depth. I also found our discussion of Citizen and Do the Right Thing on Thursday very insightful and the question about what should come after reading a text like Citizen has remained on my mind.
I really enjoyed going to the museum on Tuesday. Both parts of the class, the photographs on the first floor and the selected works on paper upstairs, were fascinating not only to reflect on myself but also to hear the group’s thoughts about. Our discussion on Thursday was also really interesting, particularly drawing connections between Do The Right Thing and Citizen. (As always, I find our way off-topic conversations at the beginning of class and the attempts to segue neatly into the literary discussions entertaining.)
Going to the SCMA this week was such a wonderful experience! I’ve been to the museum before, but only on my own time and not through an academic lens. Being able to discuss and analyze pieces of art with the class was not only fun, but also extremely thought-provoking and inspirational for my paper; I felt that engaging with art pieces made me appreciate the mixed-media of Rankine’s lyric novel even more. Overall, I really enjoyed class this week, and cannot believe that our time together this semester is coming to a close.
