On the centenary anniversary of the end of World War I in 1918, this project examines the upheaval of the old political order in Central Europe at the end of the war and its effect on societal and cultural life in Germany between 1890 and 1933. Students enrolled in German 297 at Smith College in Fall 2018 curated and designed this digital exhibition that demonstrates the transitions in the area of technology and the visual arts of this period. This exhibit features printed artifacts from Professor Joe McVeigh’s personal collection, such as original newspapers and photographs from World War I, emergency and inflation money from the early 1920s, artistic book cover art from the period before the war (1900-1914), pamphlets and handbills from the early postwar years, ration coupons from the war years, and other print artifacts from the pre- and post-war periods.
