“The Fire King Begonia is a species of flowering plant in the family Begoniaceae. It can be described as having striking red-black leaves with a vein-like look and rough, wrinkled texture. I looked to create a central spine separating the bowl-like shape’s two sides. I then looked to run many small pieces of reed through the sections in a symmetrical manner that has slight imperfections that allow for the pattern to feel more natural, similar to nature, rather than rigid and perfect, which would have a more unnatural and synthetic feel because it was perfectly arranged and spaced. I also wanted to represent myself in this piece which is seen with the structure loosely resembling the architecture seen in the Sydney Opera House in Australia, where I am from.”
