Reimagining Botanical Gardens

Botanical gardens are often seen as places of beauty and reflection, yet they are also rooted in colonial histories of extraction and control. Today, these institutions must reckon with that legacy by acknowledging the environmental, cultural, and social harms tied to Western collecting practices, particularly their impact on Indigenous communities. At the same time, Botanical Gardens are leaders in scientific research, especially in addressing climate change, placing them at a critical crossroads. This project asks to reimagine Botanical Gardens as stewards of local ecosystems and caregivers to surrounding communities. Their collections can serve as tools for ecological restoration, education, and meaningful collaboration. Reimagining can confront past violence while envisioning more just, inclusive, and sustainable futures beyond the traditional boundaries of the institution. See the quick guide to my site below.
