Museum Education Internship for Summer 2020 at Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens

The Interpretation Department at Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens in Washington, DC is seeking a paid summer Museum Education intern.

The intern works closely with the education staff to implement and plan a variety of programs to engage visitors in the museum’s collections and stories. The education department offers programs for audiences of all ages—including lectures, hands-on workshops, festivals, as well as student and Girl Scout programs. The intern will assist the department with developing, implementing, teaching, and evaluating programs in a museum setting. The intern will gain insight and have the opportunity to develop skills related to the work performed by museum educators such as writing, researching, developing program activities, and typical administrative tasks associated with museum educators’ responsibilities.

Specific areas of focus depend on departmental needs and the intern’s skills and interests, but duties could include:

  • Assist in the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of Hillwood’s annual French Festival, Tanabata family program, and summer film programs for adults
  • Assist with preparation for upcoming fall programs, such as the Family Picnic with Rainbow Families, Spooky Pooch Howl-o-ween Celebration, and a new family movie night program
  • Observe and lead components of programs for summer student groups
  • Attending inter-departmental planning and summary meetings
  • Opportunity to interact with museum staff in meaningful ways from a variety of museum departments, such as Curatorial, Marketing, and Visitor Services

Qualifications:

  • Interest in and curiosity about museum education
  • Some experience or studies in a field such as education, history, art history, museum education or studies, or studio art, a plus
  • Ability to work with people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Excellent organizational skills with an ability to adapt and/or problem-solve
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A basic proficiency level in the use of Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Publisher and Office 365 experience a plus.

The internship runs from June 2020 through mid-August 2020. The internship entails a commitment of no less than 8 consecutive weeks, 3-5 days a week, not to exceed 256 hours. The majority of the internship will take place during the workweek with some weekend and evening hours required. Actual days and hours of work will be determined by mutual agreement. This is a paid internship at $15 per hour.
