Hell’s Belles Fencing is Smith College’s own club fencing team! Fencing at Smith stretches back to the early 20th century, but our current team was founded in 1997.
Our team is home to a range of abilities and skill levels, from those who began their fencing journey here at Smith as beginners to nationally-ranked fencers who have called the sport home for years.
We compete regionally against both club and varsity teams and are proud to host the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference (lovingly nicknamed the “Big One”) on Smith campus. The Big One is the largest intercollegiate fencing event in New England and draws hundreds of fencers from across New England every year.
We are also proud to compete in the United States Association of Collegiate Fencing Clubs Nationals every year. In 2019, our team received the USACFC Spirit Award for our commitment to the sport of fencing and outstanding team spirit.
Our team is also home to several traditions, including making and selling Fencing Fudge as a fundraiser for our team in the winter, doing ropes courses at the local MacLeish Field Station for team bonding, and exchanging gifts at our yearly Secret Succubus during the holiday season.
