Submit to the Journal
The Smith College Historical Review accepts submissions on a rolling basis. Current submissions will be considered for the Spring 2027 issue. Submissions do not need to have been written for a history course; we welcome work from multiple disciplines so long as the subject matter deals meaningfully with the past. We ask that all papers meet the following guidelines in order to be considered for publication:
- Papers must have been written for an undergraduate course. Recent graduates are encouraged to submit papers written prior to their graduation.
- Submissions must not have previously been published elsewhere.
- Submissions should be between eight and fifty double-spaced pages in length.
- Submissions should be research papers with an original thesis.
- Submissions should be double-spaced and submitted in .doc or .docx format, with Chicago-style citations.
- We ask that students only submit one paper per semester.
- We ask that all papers be submitted in English.
- We ask that all papers work with at least one primary source.
If you would like to submit, please do so here.
Please direct any questions to mjohnsen@smith.edu. We look forward to reading your work!
Tips from the Editor:
Most successful papers I’ve read…
- Heavily feature archival research
- Base their argument in primary source analysis
- Are between 12 and 25 pages, though this is not a requirement
- Are narrow in scope
- Break new ground, rather than being reliant on previous historical scholarship
- Make their thesis explicit and proceed methodically through their argument
