Chocolate Peppermint Cake

1/4 c. Crisco

2 egg yolks

1/2 t. salt

1 c. sour milk

1 c. sugar

2 sq. chocolate

1 t. soda

1 t. vanilla

Beat crisco, sugar, and egg yolks briskly.

Add chocolate, melted.

Sift flour, salt, and soda.

Add to Crisco mixture alternately with the sour milk.

Mix thoroughly.

Add vanilla.

Pour into cake pan rubbed with Crisco.

Bake in moderate oven (350°) 50 to 60 minutes.

Cool.

1 1/2 c. sugar

2 egg whites

1/3 c. water

Place over boiling water.

Beat with Dover egg beater 4 minutes.

Add 1/2 t. of peppermint flavoring or 1/4 c. of crushed peppermints.

Continue beating until frosting is thick.

Remove from fire.

Beat until ready to spread.

Spread on cake.

Melt 2 sq. of chocolate, add 1 t. crisco.

Pour & spread on top of cake frosting, letting chocolate run down sides.
